Turn the key or press the start button and nothing happens?
Maybe the engine cranks slowly, you hear a clicking sound, the battery keeps going dead, or you've already jump-started the vehicle more than once.
At KG Automotive Solutions in Fitzwilliam, NH, we diagnose and repair starting and charging system problems on cars, trucks, and SUVs.
Instead of assuming a dead battery means you need a new battery—or that a vehicle that won't start automatically needs a starter—we'll evaluate the problem and work to determine what's actually causing it.
KG Automotive Solutions serves drivers throughout Fitzwilliam, Rindge, Jaffrey, Troy, Swanzey, communities throughout Cheshire County, NH, and the Winchendon, MA area.
What Is the Starting & Charging System?
Several components have to work together for your vehicle to start reliably and continue operating.
Depending on the vehicle, the starting and charging system can involve components such as:
- Battery
- Battery terminals and connections
- Starter motor
- Starter solenoid
- Relays
- Alternator
- Drive belt
- Wiring and cables
- Fuses
- Ignition or starting circuits
- Other electrical and electronic controls
Modern vehicles can also use more complex starting, charging, and battery-management systems.
That's why proper testing matters.
Car Won't Start?
A vehicle that won't start can be caused by many different problems.
You might experience:
- Nothing happening when you turn the key or press Start
- Clicking when trying to start
- Engine cranking slowly
- Engine cranking but not starting
- Intermittent starting problems
- Vehicle needing frequent jump-starts
- Lights or accessories behaving strangely
- Battery or charging warning light
- Vehicle starting sometimes but not others
These symptoms don't all point to the same repair.
For example, an engine that doesn't crank is a different diagnostic situation from an engine that cranks normally but won't run.
Tell us exactly what the vehicle is doing, and we'll use that information to help determine where to begin.
Does a Dead Battery Mean I Need a New Battery?
Not necessarily.
A discharged battery and a failed battery aren't the same thing.
Your battery may be discharged because:
- The battery itself is failing
- The alternator isn't charging properly
- There's a poor electrical connection
- The vehicle has been sitting
- Lights or accessories were left on
- Another electrical problem is draining the battery
- Cold weather exposed an already weak battery
- Another starting or charging system problem exists
If your battery keeps going dead, replacing it without understanding why could leave you with the exact same problem.
We'll test the system and recommend battery replacement when the results support it.
Battery Testing & Replacement
Your battery supplies the electrical energy needed to start the vehicle and supports the vehicle's electrical system.
Over time, batteries lose their ability to perform reliably.
Cold New Hampshire mornings can be especially hard on a weak battery because starting the engine requires significant power while low temperatures can reduce available battery performance.
If you're experiencing slow cranking, repeated jump-starts, intermittent starting problems, or other battery-related symptoms, we can evaluate the battery and starting system.
If the battery has failed and replacement is appropriate, we'll install the correct type and specification for the vehicle.
Alternator Testing & Repair
Once the engine is running, the alternator plays an important role in supplying electrical power and maintaining the battery's state of charge.
A charging-system problem can sometimes look like a battery problem.
Possible signs of an alternator or charging-system concern can include:
- Battery repeatedly going dead
- Battery or charging warning light
- Electrical accessories behaving abnormally
- Starting problems after the vehicle has been driven
- Unusual noises from the belt-drive area
- Other charging-related symptoms
These symptoms don't automatically mean the alternator needs replacement.
The battery, wiring, connections, drive belt, tensioner, charging controls, or other electrical components may also contribute to the problem.
We'll test the system before recommending an alternator.
Starter Problems
The starter motor helps crank the engine when you attempt to start the vehicle.
Possible starter-related symptoms can include:
- Clicking when attempting to start
- No-crank condition
- Intermittent starting
- Unusual noises during starting
- Engine cranking unusually slowly
But once again, symptoms alone don't prove that the starter has failed.
A weak battery, poor battery connection, wiring problem, relay, electrical control issue, or another condition can sometimes create similar symptoms.
We want the diagnosis to support the repair before replacing the starter.
Why Does My New Battery Keep Dying?
This is a particularly important clue.
If you've recently replaced the battery and it keeps going dead, don't automatically buy another battery.
The problem may be somewhere else in the starting, charging, or electrical system.
Depending on the symptoms, testing may need to consider the charging system, battery connections, electrical circuits, or other potential causes.
A new battery can't correct an underlying problem that's preventing it from staying properly charged.
Battery Terminals, Cables & Electrical Connections
Sometimes the problem isn't the battery, starter, or alternator itself.
Corrosion, loose connections, damaged cables, excessive resistance, poor grounds, or other connection problems can interfere with starting and charging.
That's why we don't want to diagnose an electrical problem by looking at one component in isolation.
The connections between components matter too.
Serpentine Belts & the Charging System
On many vehicles, the alternator is driven by the serpentine belt.
A damaged belt, belt-drive problem, tensioner issue, or other mechanical condition can interfere with the operation of belt-driven accessories.
If testing points us toward a belt-drive concern, we'll consider the related components instead of automatically assuming the alternator itself has failed.

Starting Problems Aren't Always Starting-System Problems
Sometimes the engine cranks normally but won't actually start and run.
That's an important distinction.
If the starter is turning the engine normally, the problem may involve fuel delivery, ignition, engine management, sensors, mechanical conditions, or another system entirely.
In that situation, additional diagnosis may be necessary to determine why the engine isn't running.
That's where our broader Engine Diagnostics services may come into play.
Every Service Visit Includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection
Every service visit at KG Automotive Solutions includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection at no additional charge.
During your visit, our technicians have an opportunity to evaluate visible conditions throughout the vehicle, including accessible battery connections, belts, leaks, tires, brakes, steering and suspension components, and other areas.
If we identify something you should know about, we'll document what we're seeing and communicate it with you.
Some concerns need attention now.
Others can be planned for later or simply monitored.
We'll help you understand the difference.
