Transmission problems can be intimidating—especially when you don't know whether you're dealing with a relatively minor issue or a major repair.
If your vehicle is slipping, shifting differently, leaking fluid, making unusual noises, hesitating when put into gear, or displaying a warning light, don't assume the worst.
At KG Automotive Solutions in Fitzwilliam, NH, we diagnose transmission-related concerns and provide transmission service and repair based on what we actually find.
Our first goal isn't to sell you a transmission.
It's to determine what's causing the problem.
KG Automotive Solutions serves drivers throughout Fitzwilliam, Rindge, Jaffrey, Troy, Swanzey, communities throughout Cheshire County, NH, and the Winchendon, MA area.
Signs of a Possible Transmission Problem
Transmission problems can show up in a number of different ways.
You may notice:
- Slipping or unusual shifting
- Delayed engagement into Drive or Reverse
- Harsh shifting
- Difficulty changing gears
- Engine RPM increasing without a corresponding increase in vehicle speed
- Vehicle not moving properly when in gear
- Grinding, whining, clunking, or other unusual noises
- Transmission fluid leaking
- Burning smell
- Warning lights
- Reduced-power or limp-mode operation
- Changes in how the vehicle drives or responds
If something feels different, tell us exactly what you're experiencing.
Those symptoms give us a place to start—but symptoms alone don't tell us which component has failed.
Transmission Diagnosis Comes First
A transmission is a complex system, and modern vehicles add another layer of electronic controls, sensors, modules, wiring, and communication between vehicle systems.
That's why we don't want to diagnose a transmission problem based on a warning light or symptom alone.
Depending on the vehicle and concern, transmission diagnosis may involve evaluating:
- Diagnostic trouble codes
- Transmission operation
- Fluid level or condition when applicable
- Fluid leaks
- Electrical components and circuits
- Sensors and controls
- Related drivetrain components
- Vehicle history
- When and how the symptoms occur
- Other available testing information
A trouble code can point us in a direction.
It doesn't automatically tell us which part to replace.
We'll work to identify the cause of the concern before recommending a repair.
Transmission Repair
Not every transmission problem requires replacing the entire transmission.
Depending on the vehicle and what testing reveals, a transmission-related concern may involve components or systems that can be repaired without replacing the complete unit.
The appropriate repair depends entirely on the cause of the problem.
If we determine that the concern can be addressed without replacing the transmission, we'll explain what we've found and what repair we're recommending.
If the transmission itself has experienced significant internal failure and replacement is the more appropriate option, we'll explain that too.
Transmission Replacement
Sometimes a transmission has reached the point where replacement is the appropriate repair.
Because transmission replacement is a significant investment, we don't make that recommendation lightly.
If testing indicates that the transmission has failed, we'll help you understand:
- What we've found
- Why replacement is being recommended
- What the repair involves
- The available options for your vehicle
- Other known conditions of the vehicle
- Whether investing in the repair makes sense for your situation
You should understand why you're spending that kind of money before approving the repair.

Automatic Transmission Service & Repair
Automatic transmissions combine mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems to control how power is transferred through the drivetrain.
Symptoms such as slipping, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, or unusual operation can have several possible causes.
A transmission-related warning or symptom doesn't automatically mean the entire transmission has failed.
Depending on the vehicle, diagnosis may need to consider the transmission itself as well as related electrical, control, fluid, or drivetrain systems.
We'll base our recommendations on what the testing and vehicle condition actually show.
Manual Transmission Concerns
Manual-transmission vehicles can experience shifting and drivability concerns too.
Depending on the symptoms, a problem may involve:
- Clutch components
- Clutch hydraulics
- Linkage
- Internal transmission components
- Fluid-related concerns
- Other drivetrain components
Difficulty shifting a manual-transmission vehicle doesn't automatically mean the transmission itself needs replacement.
We'll evaluate the concern and determine where the problem is coming from before recommending the repair.
For clutch-specific concerns, visit our Clutch Repair & Services page.
Transmission Fluid Leaks
If you notice fluid underneath your vehicle, it's worth finding out where it's coming from.
A transmission-fluid leak does not automatically mean the transmission needs to be replaced.
Depending on the vehicle, leaks can potentially come from:
- Seals or gaskets
- Transmission lines
- Connections
- Cooling components
- Transmission housing or related components
- Other areas that may initially appear to be transmission-related
Identifying the source matters.
If a transmission loses enough fluid, continuing to drive can potentially contribute to additional damage.
If you've noticed a new leak, let us know.
Transmission Fluid Service
Transmission fluid plays an important role in many transmission systems, but maintenance requirements vary significantly between vehicles.
Different transmissions use different:
- Fluid specifications
- Service procedures
- Designs
- Maintenance strategies
- Service intervals
That's why we don't automatically recommend a transmission flush simply because a vehicle reaches a particular mileage.
Instead, we consider factors such as:
- Vehicle and transmission design
- Maintenance history
- Fluid condition when it can be appropriately evaluated
- Manufacturer information
- How the vehicle is used
- Existing symptoms
- Overall vehicle condition
If transmission fluid service is appropriate, we'll explain what we're recommending and why.
For more information about vehicle fluids, visit our Vehicle Fluid Services page.
Is a Transmission Flush Going to Fix My Transmission Problem?
Not necessarily—and this is an important distinction.
If your transmission is already slipping, shifting poorly, making unusual noises, or experiencing another significant problem, simply changing or servicing the fluid should not be treated as an automatic repair.
The problem needs to be evaluated first.
We don't want to sell you maintenance and imply that it will correct a mechanical or electrical failure if diagnosis is actually what's needed.
Transmission Warning Light or Check Engine Light
Depending on the vehicle, a transmission problem may trigger a check engine light, transmission warning, or other dashboard message.
That warning tells us that the vehicle has detected something outside its expected operating conditions.
It does not necessarily tell us exactly what has failed.
We'll retrieve the available information and use it as part of the diagnostic process rather than simply replacing whatever component happens to be mentioned in a trouble code.
Should I Repair the Transmission or Replace the Vehicle?
When a transmission problem turns into a major repair, this becomes an important question.
Sometimes repairing the vehicle makes excellent financial sense.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Factors worth considering can include:
- Overall vehicle condition
- Age and mileage
- Maintenance history
- Other upcoming repair needs
- Cost of the transmission repair
- Current vehicle value
- Cost of replacing the vehicle
- How long you intend to keep it
- Your overall goals for the vehicle
We'll tell you what we know about the condition of the vehicle so you can make an informed decision.
Our job is to give you the information—not pressure you into the repair.
Every Service Visit Includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection
Every service visit at KG Automotive Solutions includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection at no additional charge.
During the inspection, our technicians evaluate visible conditions throughout the vehicle and document concerns we identify.
If we see a leak or another accessible condition that may be related to the transmission or drivetrain, we'll let you know.
However, a Digital Vehicle Inspection is not the same as transmission diagnosis.
Many transmission problems require additional testing that can't be performed during a routine visual inspection.
If additional diagnosis is needed, we'll explain that before moving forward.
Have a Transmission Concern? Start With a FREE No Wrench Inspection
You don't need to know whether the transmission is actually the problem before contacting us.
If your vehicle suddenly starts shifting differently, develops a leak, makes a strange noise, or simply isn't driving the way it normally does, our FREE No Wrench Inspection can be a good first step.
We'll perform an initial evaluation without taking anything apart and determine whether there's an obvious concern or whether additional testing and diagnosis are needed.
If further diagnosis is necessary, we'll explain the next step.
Tell us what the vehicle is doing. We'll start there.
