What Does the Water Pump Do?

The water pump helps keep that coolant circulating.

Depending on the vehicle, the water pump may be driven by:

  • A serpentine or accessory belt
  • A timing belt
  • A timing chain or related drive system
  • An electric motor

Because water pump designs and locations vary considerably between vehicles, the repair required can range from relatively accessible to considerably more involved.


What Causes a Water Pump to Fail?

Water pumps can develop problems for several reasons.

Depending on the design and vehicle, failures can involve:

  • Bearing wear
  • Seal failure
  • Coolant leakage
  • Pulley or drive-related problems
  • Internal pump damage
  • Electrical failure on electric water pumps
  • Corrosion or deterioration
  • Other cooling-system conditions

Age and mileage can certainly play a role, but we don't recommend replacing a water pump simply because the odometer reaches a particular number.

We look at the actual condition of the vehicle and what the testing shows.


Diagnosing a Coolant Leak

Finding coolant underneath your vehicle doesn't automatically tell us where the leak is coming from.

Coolant can travel along engine components, splash while driving, or drip from an area different from the actual source.

Depending on the concern, cooling-system diagnosis may involve inspecting the system and performing additional testing to locate the source of the leak.

If the water pump is leaking, we'll show you what we found when possible and explain the recommended repair.

If the leak is coming from somewhere else, we'll tell you that instead.


Water Pump Replacement

If testing confirms that the water pump is failing, replacement is generally the appropriate repair.

The exact procedure depends heavily on the vehicle.

A water pump replacement may involve:

  • Removing components necessary to access the pump
  • Removing the failed water pump
  • Installing the appropriate replacement
  • Replacing seals or gaskets as required
  • Refilling the cooling system with the appropriate coolant
  • Properly bleeding or evacuating air from the cooling system when required
  • Inspecting related components
  • Verifying cooling-system operation after the repair

Water Pumps & Timing Belts

On some vehicles, the water pump is driven by the timing belt.

When that's the case, replacing the water pump can require much of the same labor needed to access the timing belt.

Depending on the vehicle, timing-belt history, mileage, component condition, and repair being performed, it may make sense to address related components at the same time.

That doesn't mean every water pump automatically requires a timing belt—or vice versa.

Water Pumps & Serpentine Belts

Other water pumps are driven by the vehicle's serpentine or accessory belt.

If the pump is belt-driven, we'll consider the visible condition and operation of related components where appropriate.

A problem involving a belt, tensioner, pulley, or other belt-driven accessory can sometimes produce noises or symptoms that may initially seem like a water pump problem.

Electric Water Pumps

Some newer vehicles use electrically driven water pumps rather than a traditional belt-driven design.

An electric water pump can fail mechanically or electrically and may require a different diagnostic approach than a conventional pump.

The vehicle and system design determine the appropriate testing and repair.


Is It Safe to Drive With a Bad Water Pump?

If your vehicle is overheating, continuing to drive it can turn a cooling-system problem into serious engine damage.

An overheating engine can potentially lead to:

  • A much more expensive repair
