What Is Tire Balancing?
Even a properly manufactured tire and wheel assembly can have slight differences in weight around it.
When the assembly rotates at higher speeds, an imbalance can create vibration.
During tire balancing, specialized equipment measures the tire and wheel assembly to identify weight imbalance. The appropriate amount of wheel weight can then be added in the necessary locations to help the assembly rotate more smoothly.
Proper balancing can help provide a smoother ride and prevent unnecessary vibration.
Signs Your Tires May Need Balancing
Possible symptoms of a tire or wheel imbalance can include:
- Steering-wheel vibration
- Vibration that becomes noticeable at certain speeds
- Vibration felt through the seat or floor
- A new vibration after tire installation or repair
- Changes in ride smoothness
- Certain unusual tire-wear conditions
However, these symptoms don't automatically mean balancing will fix the problem.
Vibrations can also be related to:
- Tire damage
- Bent or damaged wheels
- Uneven tire wear
- Tire pressure
- Steering or suspension components
- Wheel bearings
- Brake-related concerns
- Drivetrain components
- Other mechanical conditions
That's why we don't want to simply balance the tires and assume the problem is solved.
Tire Balancing vs. Wheel Alignment
Tire balancing and wheel alignment are two completely different services, even though they're often confused.
Tire Balancing
Balancing addresses weight distribution within the rotating tire and wheel assembly.
An imbalance is commonly associated with vibration, particularly at certain speeds.
Wheel Alignment
Alignment involves the angles and positioning of the wheels relative to the vehicle and road.
Alignment concerns are more commonly associated with symptoms such as:
- Vehicle pulling or drifting
- Off-center steering wheel
- Certain uneven tire-wear patterns
- Changes in how the vehicle tracks down the road
If you're not sure which service you need, you don't have to figure it out yourself.
Tell us what the vehicle is doing and we'll help determine where to start.

When Should Tires Be Balanced?
We don't recommend tire balancing simply because you've reached an arbitrary mileage.
There are several situations where balancing may be appropriate, including:
- Installing new tires
- Mounting a tire onto a wheel
- Addressing a vibration concern
- After certain tire repairs
- When an existing balance issue is identified
- When a wheel weight has been lost
- When tire or wheel conditions indicate balancing should be evaluated
Your vehicle doesn't automatically need tire balancing every few thousand miles simply because a certain amount of time or mileage has passed.
We recommend it when there's a reason to.
Tire Balancing With New Tires
When new tires are mounted, they should be properly balanced as part of the installation process.
Even a brand-new tire isn't perfectly identical in weight around its entire circumference, and the wheel itself can also have variations.
Balancing the complete tire and wheel assembly helps account for those differences.
At KG Automotive Solutions, tire installation is more than simply putting a tire onto a wheel. We want the finished assembly properly installed and ready for the road.

What If My Vehicle Still Vibrates After Balancing?
If a tire and wheel assembly is properly balanced but the vehicle continues to vibrate, we need to look beyond basic balancing.
The location, speed, and conditions under which the vibration occurs can provide useful information.
For example:
- Does it happen only at highway speeds?
- Do you feel it mostly in the steering wheel?
- Is it more noticeable through the seat or floor?
- Does it happen while accelerating?
- Does it happen while braking?
- Did it begin after hitting a pothole?
- Did it start after new tires were installed?
- Is the vibration constant or intermittent?
Tell us as much as you can about when and how it happens.
That can help us determine whether the next step involves the tires, wheels, steering and suspension, brakes, drivetrain, or another area of the vehicle.
New England Roads Can Be Hard on Tires & Wheels
Potholes, frost heaves, rough pavement, winter conditions, and road debris are part of driving in New Hampshire.
A hard impact can potentially:
- Damage a tire
- Bend or damage a wheel
- Affect steering or suspension components
- Affect alignment
- Create a new vibration
- Contribute to other tire or wheel concerns
If a vibration began immediately after hitting a pothole or another road hazard, tell us that when you schedule.
That information can help us determine what needs to be evaluated rather than assuming the tires simply need balancing.
Tire Balancing & Uneven Tire Wear
Uneven tire wear can sometimes affect how smoothly a tire rolls, but balancing can't correct a tire that has already developed a physical wear problem.
If a tire has significant irregular wear, damage, or another condition, adding wheel weights isn't necessarily going to solve the underlying issue.
We'll consider the tire's condition along with other factors before recommending the appropriate next step.
Every Service Visit Includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection
Every service visit at KG Automotive Solutions includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection at no additional charge.
During your DVI, our technicians evaluate visible conditions throughout the vehicle, including your tires and accessible steering and suspension components.
This can help identify things such as:
- Tire damage
- Uneven or unusual tire wear
- Visible wheel concerns
- Steering or suspension conditions
- Other issues that may deserve attention
A Digital Vehicle Inspection doesn't replace tire-balancing equipment or vibration diagnosis, but it gives us additional information about the overall condition of the vehicle.
Not Sure Why Your Vehicle Is Vibrating?
You don't need to walk into KG Automotive Solutions knowing whether you need tire balancing, an alignment, or something else.
Tell us what the vehicle is doing.
If you're experiencing a vibration, let us know:
- When it happens
- Approximately what speed you're traveling
- Where you feel the vibration
- Whether it changes while accelerating or braking
- When you first noticed it
- Whether anything happened immediately before it started
We'll use that information along with what we find on the vehicle to help determine the appropriate next step.
